Health Action Information Network (HAIN) serves the research, information and education needs of Philippine and international agencies working in health and development.
Background
HAIN was established in 1985 to serve the information and research needs of community-based health programs (CBHPs) in the Philippines. These CBHPs were established as an alternative health system for marginalized rural and urban communities. Through the years, HAIN’s work with the CBHPs has expanded to include training and education activities.
Furthermore, HAIN’s constituency has expanded beyond the CBHPs to include development organizations and groups working with specific populations such as women, students, consumers, cultural minorities, peasants and workers, sex workers and men who have sex with men. HAIN also works with media practitioners, academicians, government officials and donor agencies in promoting health and development.
Working Philosophy
HAIN believes that health is a development issue with economic, political and cultural dimensions. It believes that health comes with empowering people and communities with access to objective and accurate information on health care to make their own decisions and to organize for their rights. With the help of its vast information network, HAIN seeks to provide information at the local level, where it is needed the most.
Vision
A society where social, cultural, economic and political conditions enable people to enjoy their basic human rights and realize their full potentials.
Mission
To contribute to the empowerment of people and communities by making available and accessible objective, accurate and timely information on health and health-related issues.
Goal
To have people and communities with increased awareness and capacity to analyze and respond to health and health-related issues and problems.
PROGRAMS
Publications
HAIN publications include newsletters, books and monographs. Some of our publications present results of our research findings and provide documentations of the trainings we have conducted. The publications cover topics relevant to various health aspects from a wide range of social science disciplines and cater to different sectors. These publications reach both local and international communities.
Research
HAIN has conducted innovative research in diverse areas such as traditional medicine, young adult sexuality, pesticide use, HIV/AIDS, knowledge and attitudes to family planning, policy reviews on natural family planning, and reproductive health problems. The research activities are usually conducted in coordination with NGOs or academic institutions outside Metro Manila. The research activities are used to guide our training and education programs as well as to formulate recommendations for public policy.
Resource Center
The HAIN Resource Center serves and responds to the information needs of CBHPs, partner NGOs, researchers and policy makers. This information is useful in program development, advocacy work support, academic research, and policy development. The Resource Center offers thousands of special collections including hard-to-find research materials and HAIN publications that give a critical analysis of health issues.
Training
HAIN conducts training and educational activities throughout the country, particularly on reproductive and sexual health, and in pharmaceuticals. These activities usually involve intensive workshops emphasizing both biomedical and psychosocial aspects of health care and utilizing interactive methods. We have conducted workshops for a wide range of participants including health professionals, health science students, women’s groups, men who have sex with men, sex workers, and media practitioners. HAIN has produced widely circulated teaching materials on HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and rational drug use.
HAIN collaborates with different organizations, both at the national and international level, to expand its reach, maximize resources, and strengthen networking for a more organized effort in advocacy.
