Obesity
Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them are obese.
Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer.

Depression
An estimated 121 million people currently suffer from depression. An estimated 5.8% of men and 9.5% of women will experience a depressive episode in any given year.
Around 24 million people worldwide suffer from schizophrenia. The disorder is found equally in men and women. Women tend to develop it later in life, and also tend to have a better course and outcome after treatment.

Dementia
An estimated 37 million people worldwide live with dementia -- with Alzheimer's disease causing the majority of cases.
About 5% of men and 6% of women over 60 years of age are affected with Alzheimer's. With the ageing of populations, this figure is projected to increase rapidly over the next 20 years.

Alcohol Use
Worldwide, 5% of all deaths of young people between the ages of 15 and 29 are attributable to alcohol use.
76.3 million persons suffer from alcohol use disorders.

Tuberculosis
Of the 1.7 billion people estimated to be infected with tuberculosis, 1.3 billion are in developing countries.
There are about 2 to 3 million TB deaths every year and around 8 million new cases diagnosed each year.

HIV and AIDS
In 2002, 42 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. About 800,000 of them are children. In that year, 5 million more people were infected with HIV. An estimated 20 million people have died of AIDS since the 1980s.

Population
World population is estimated to increase 41% by 2050, to 8.9 billion people. The increase will happen tremendously in developing nations.
Although the US population increases roughly by 3 million a year, whereas India’s increases by nearly 16 million, the additional Americans have greater environmental impact. They are responsile for 15.7 million tons of additional carbon to the athmosphere, compared with only 4.9 million tons in India.

Poverty
15.2% of Filipinos live in extereme poverty and surviving on less than $1 (P56) a day.
93 percent of the extremely poor in developing Asia were in India (357 million), China (203 million) and other South Asian countries.

Contraceptive Use
From 40 percent in 1998, the overall contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR), use of contraception, increased to 49 percent in 2003.
The level of use of modern contraceptive methods steadily increased over the past 10 years, while the prevalence rate for traditional methods remained below 20 percent.
The pill is the most widely used method for family planning, followed by female sterilization.

Adolescent Reproductive Health
Of the estimated 1.8 million babies born every year, 30 percent come from young women. By age 21, each married woman has already bore one child.
10 percent of all births in the Philippines occur to teenage mothers aged 15 to 29. Five percent of those who have experienced pregnancies and childbirths had at least one abortion experience.
4 out of 10 abortion complications treated in hospitals occur among young girls.
